VISITING JAPAN

How to see a doctor in Japan as a tourist

From finding a medical institution to preparing your first inquiry in English or Chinese.

The short answer

For a non-emergency visit, identify your current area and preferred language, contact a medical institution and confirm that it can see a short-term visitor. Bring the documents it requests and ask for a cost estimate. For an ambulance in Japan, call 119.

1. Find a facility for your area and language

JNTO's medical-institution search has filters for location, language and medical field. It is a useful starting point whether you are looking in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto or another area. The search listing is not an appointment confirmation.

When contacting a facility, explain that you are a visitor and give your travel dates. Ask whether the relevant service and language support are available for the appointment you need.

2. Describe your concern and travel schedule

Prepare a short account of what you want assessed, when it started and any medical care you have already received. Include the city where you are now, your accommodation and when you next travel.

If you are looking for an English-speaking doctor or a Chinese-language consultation, ask whether you will communicate directly with the clinician or through an interpreter, and whether there is an extra fee.

3. Keep the requested documents ready

The institution will tell you what it needs. Confirm the submission method before sending copies of your passport or detailed health records in a chat.

  • Passport or other identification requested by the facility.
  • Travel-insurance information, including any assistance case number.
  • Medicine list, medicine packaging and existing prescriptions if relevant.
  • Useful previous reports and the dates of earlier treatment.
  • A contact method you can use during the rest of your trip.

4. Confirm online or in-person care

Ask the provider whether your concern can be assessed online or needs an examination at a facility. An online inquiry is not a medical assessment. If a video appointment is offered, confirm the required device, connection, location and plan if an in-person visit becomes necessary.

5. Leave with a clear follow-up plan

Before the appointment ends, ask what happens next, where to direct follow-up questions and what to do if you move to another city or leave Japan. Request any receipts or other documents your insurer needs.

If medicines are involved, confirm who dispenses them and where to collect them. Tell the provider your departure date before accepting arrangements that depend on delivery or another appointment.

Questions people ask

Can I book an English-speaking doctor through this website?

Start with the JMC WhatsApp inquiry desk. The desk can confirm the available next step for your location; this website does not display live appointment inventory or automatically reserve a doctor.

What if I need Chinese rather than English?

Use WeChat, ID Hiroo-online0, for the initial Chinese inquiry. Ask which consultation language the actual provider can offer before booking.

What should I do outside clinic opening hours?

Check the facility's after-hours instructions and available local medical services. For an ambulance in Japan, call 119. Do not rely on a WhatsApp or WeChat reply for emergency help.
