Ask for a breakdown of the likely costs
Ask which costs are an estimate and what could change after the clinician sees you. Also confirm the payment currency, accepted methods and cancellation terms. JMC does not publish one fixed price that covers every visitor or service.
- Initial consultation and any follow-up appointment.
- Tests or procedures that may be added after assessment.
- Prescription and pharmacy charges, if applicable.
- Interpretation or non-clinical coordination, if requested.
- Documents, after-hours charges or delivery, if relevant.
Confirm the insurer's process for this visit
Contact the assistance service named in your policy. Ask whether it needs to approve the visit, whether it has a facility network and what documents it requires. Explain the type of appointment you are considering.
JNTO's guidance notes that cashless arrangements depend on the insurer. A policy document alone does not confirm that a particular facility can bill your insurer directly.
If you pay first, ask what to keep
Ask the insurer which receipts, itemised statements or medical documents it requires and in which language. Ask the institution what it can issue, any document fee and how long it will take. Keep a copy of the instructions with the documents.
Give the desk enough detail to discuss fees
State where you are staying, the help you are seeking, your preferred language and your time in Japan. If an insurer has already given you instructions, include a short outline rather than sending your entire policy in the first chat.
Questions people ask
Is there one standard price for a tourist doctor visit?
The price depends on the medical institution, consultation scope and any additional services. Request a quote for your own appointment before booking.
Does travel insurance cover an online consultation?
Ask your insurer about the exact service and provider. Do not assume that coverage for an in-person visit also covers an online appointment or coordination charge.
Does JAPAN MED CONSULT guarantee cashless treatment?
No. Ask the insurer and treating institution whether they can arrange direct billing for your case. Confirm how any amount you pay yourself will be handled.
